Bioheat Frequently Asked Questions
Biodiesel is an alternative to diesel fuel that is made from vegetable oil. It is:
- American – Biodiesel is domestically produced. Using it supports U.S. farmers, American companies, and local economies instead of foreign oil cartels.
- Better for Engines & Oil Burners – Biodiesel’s lubricity keeps engines running smoother and longer, fuel & exhaust systems stay cleaner, maintenance costs may be decreased.
- Biodegradable – Biodiesel has been shown to biodegrade faster than sugar.
- Clean-burning – Compared to diesel, pure biodiesel reduces emissions of unburned hydrocarbons 68%, carbon monoxide 44%, particulates 40%, sulfates 100%, and PAH’s (aromatic compounds that have been shown to cause cancer) 75-90%.
- Easy to use – Biodiesel works in any diesel engine or home heating equipment with no modifications, and it can be blended in any concentration with diesel fuel (some precautions must be taken when using higher concentrations).
- Nontoxic – Toxicity tests show that biodiesel is 10 times less toxic than table salt. Emissions from pure (neat) biodiesel are 94% less likely to produce cancer than diesel exhaust.
- Renewable – Biodiesel is stored solar energy. Unlike fossil fuels, we can make more.
- Safe – Biodiesel is the safest of all fuels to handle and store and it is 100% biodegradable.

Biodiesel is a clean-burning, carbon-neutral, renewable fuel which can be used in any diesel engine and requires no engine modifications. Biodiesel emissions are significantly lower than those of regular diesel, and it is 100% biodegradable. Biodiesel is made from vegetable oil, primarily from soybeans, grown in the US and Canada.
Biodiesel is a cleaner, environmentally-sound alternative to petroleum diesel. Using biodiesel reduces our dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels, of which over 60% is used for transportation in the US. Biodiesel can prolong the life of your engine by lubricating engine and fuel systems, thereby reducing engine wear. Biodiesel is made using vegetable oil, lye, and alcohol (pure methanol or ethanol). The most common vegetable oils that are used are soybean oil and rapeseed oil (canola), but biodiesel can also be made from sunflower oil or even used fryer grease!
